Sydney is a young and vibrant city, famous for its sparkling harbour, magnificent Opera House, sandy beaches and friendly, welcoming people. Sydney is Australia's largest city, home to four million people.
Originally inhabited by Australia's indigenous Aborigines for over 40 000 years, Sydney was the site of the British landing on the continent in 1788. Since early settlement, Sydney has grown from an early colony for the British to the modern, international city it is today. Sydney is most famous for hosting the 2000 Olympics, described by former Olympic President Juan Antonio Samaranch as "the best Games ever".
The cosmopolitan city is abuzz at all hours of the day and night, and you can experience the many cultures which make up our multicultural home. You could spend months sampling Thai, Indonesian, Vietnamese, and Japanese restaurants, or visiting the Italian, Chinese and Portuguese influenced sections of this wide and diverse city. Sydney is famous for its award winning Baristas, and there is always a pub handy to relax and experience traditional Australian life!
Australia is the gateway to Asia. With its proximity to Indonesia, Japan, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam, and Thailand, Sydney is a great place to launch your teaching career. These countries have a high demand for TEFL teachers, and many include airfares from Australia when hiring new teachers.
Sydney is a truly multicultural city, and because Australia is an English speaking country, it is a popular destination for students and migrants from non-English speaking countries. Over 150 000 international students study in Australia every year, and students from Asian countries make up the majority of this group, most of whom live and study in Sydney.
Why not gain some experience teaching non-English speakers at colleges and English Centres in Sydney, while spending your leisure time hanging out at one of the many beachside cafes, or exploring the unique Australian environment outside of the city? (You might like to pat a kangaroo, or hold a koala too!)
Via Lingua Sydney is happy to offer full support for all of our international visitors to ensure they have the most enjoyable experience possible.
